In Kochi, the government has issued a compensation of Rs 25,000 to a complainant named Sojish from Nettoor, as per the directive of the state human rights commission. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued the order, stating that the compensation will be deducted from the salary of the former Sub-Inspector (SI) of Panangad in three equal instalments. The commission's chairman, Justice JB Kosi, had mandated the compensation following Sojish's complaint that he, a member of a scheduled caste, was mistreated by the former Panangad SI Vipin AB. Sojish was allegedly taken into custody by the SI's team without proper authorization while he was hospitalized. This led Sojish to file a complaint with the commission, resulting in an order for both legal action against the SI and compensation for Sojish. Despite a previous investigation against the SI and subsequent disciplinary measures, no compensation had been previously awarded. The government noted that the SI was given an opportunity to present a defense before the final decision but failed to do so, prompting the government to intervene and provide the compensation.
